Course Overview

During your time, you will study a wide of range of topics, looking at theories and explanations for social behaviour and the methods used in social research. Lessons involve discussion, analysis and debate, all of which offer you a real opportunity to get to grips with the material, as well as the chance to prepare yourself for the demands of the exam.

A Level Sociology gives you a strong foundation for further study at degree level. It will provide the learner with knowledge that can be applied to all aspects of society as it encourages the use of a variety of academic skills, especially thinking critically about the world. Topics include the cause of crime, educational inequalities, and the role of religion in contemporary society.

As well as a varied classroom experience, this subject gives you the opportunity to explore sociological issues by participating in several trips, includingthe Shepton Mallet prison, and the Royal Courts of Justice.

Assessment Methods

You will be assessed through written examinations with regular internal assessment taking place as the course unfolds. Your final A Level exam will be made up of three exam papers covering the entire programme at the end of year two.

Progression Options

As a subject, sociology has universal currency and is expanding in further and higher education. There are many universities which recognise sociology as a valid subject and accept it as an entrance A Level. The majority of universities also offer three year degree courses allowing students to gain a BSc or BA (Hons) in Sociology, often allowing it to be combined with criminology, psychology or other related topics.

Sociology also has importance for a variety of careers and is viewed as an vital part of professional training for a variety of occupations, including nursing, personnel, social work, police, probation and teaching.
